In the wake of Tropical Storm Debby’s passage through central North Carolina, Lee County has issued a state of emergency declaration that will remain in effect until 8 a.m. Saturday.
As of 2 p.m. Thursday, Duke Energy’s outage map showed about 1,000 Lee County customers without power, with the majority being in the southern and southwestern portions of the county, as well as in west Sanford. Estimated restoration times for most of the outages weren’t available as of this writing.
In addition, Sanford city government posted on Facebook Thursday morning that multiple city streets were closed due to fallen trees and power lines. Several of those had reopened by Thursday afternoon, but others remained closed.
The county’s declaration warned that Debby is capable of bringing “hazardous conditions such as heavy rain, damaging winds and possible tornados” and creating “access obstacles for emergency responders.”
The emergency declaration makes “no conditions or restrictions” on travel but advises limiting travel if “reasonably possible.”
