A Sanford man who was charged with felony hit and run after a car accident which killed a 16 year old in 2023 was found guilty of a lesser charge related to the case in Lee County Superior Court after a three day trial this week.

Josue Palacios of Sanford was found guilty of misdemeanor counts of hit and run, failing to report an accident and not having an operator’s license. He had originally been charged with a felony count of hit and run related to the accident, however the jury only found him guilty of the lesser included misdemeanor hit and run count.

The accident occurred on June 3, 2023. Authorities at the time didn’t release the child’s name due to their age.

Palacios was charged by the North Carolina Highway Patrol after the accident, which occurred in the day’s predawn hours near the intersection of Firetower Road and N.C. Highway 78. Palacios, who left the scene and was arrested later the same day, told the Highway Patrol at the time that he thought he’d hit a deer.

Palacios was sentenced to 45 days in the Lee County Jail for the misdemeanor convictions. Assistant District Attorney Byron Beasley prosecuted, and Palacios was represented by defense attorney Chas Post.
