Liberty Waste has withdrawn an application to Lee County government for a construction and demolition landfill at Amos Bridges and Colon roads, the Rant has learned.
Liberty, based in Raleigh, had proposed the landfill before the Lee County Board of Commissioners in September. The commissioners approved updates to the county’s solid waste ordinance following the request in September, but didn’t grant or deny a franchise agreement Liberty needed to operate. But Liberty met strong opposition at a public hearing this month from residents in the area and those with nearby business interests.
The parcel in question was home to Sanford Brick from 1920 to 1945, but has been out of use for decades. Liberty told the county that the lifespan of the landfill would have been 15 to 18 years, after which it would have been covered and donated for use as a park.
More coverage of this story will appear in the November edition of The Rant Monthly.
