Authorities in Lee County on Thursday afternoon shot and killed a teenager suspected of killing his grandmother in Hoke County earlier in the day, according to multiple law enforcement agencies and media reports.
Lee County Sheriff Brian Estes said Friday his office received contact from authorities in Hoke County about the killing the morning prior, in which a woman – identified by ABC11 News as 68-year-old Connie Linen of Raeford – had been “violently murdered by her grandson.” There was no other information provided about the suspect other than he was a “juvenile male approximately 5’11” tall and weighing around 150 pounds.” ABC 11 reported that he was 13.
Estes’ release said deputies located the teenager behind an abandoned mobile home in the Cameron area of Lee County around 2:30 p.m. Thursday and that he was in a stolen vehicle that belonged to his grandmother. He ran into a wooded area, the release said, before picking up a 2×4 and charging toward a deputy.
“In close proximity, the deputy discharged his weapon, striking the suspect,” the sheriff’s office report indicates.
The juvenile was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies in Hoke County had obtained warrants charging him with first degree murder.
ABC11 reported that deputies in Hoke County found Linen dead inside her home after receiving a check for well being, and that a second 911 caller had reported finding her unresponsive.
The teen was apparently a student at San Lee Middle School. Principal Christian Chaney sent an email Friday morning about the situation and said additional counselors, social workers and support staff were available at the school.
“Our hearts are with all who are affected by this situation and we know the news of this incident may bring up a range of emotions for students and staff,” he wrote. “We encourage you to check in with your child at home and pay close attention to any changes in behavior or concerns that may present themselves in the days ahead.”
The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating, which is standard protocol when an officer shoots someone.
