Sanford native Thomas Harrington has been called back to the major leagues by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Harrington and Antwone Kelly were called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday in an effort to improve a pitching staff that has the fourth-worst ERA in the majors.

He pitched in three games for the Pirates in 2025 — once as a starter and twice out of the bullpen. According to MLB.com, he has moved full-time to relief this year.

“The biggest thing was figuring out that routine coming out of the bullpen,” Harrington told MLB.com. “I’ve been really excited about my breaking balls this year. I feel like they’ve made a lot of progress, and then really just made some progress with fastball locations over the past month.”

Harrington, 25, was selected 36th overall in the 2022 Draft out of Campbell. He is ranked among the top-30 prospects in the Pirates’ system by both MLB Pipeline (No. 12) and Baseball America (No. 26).

He has been included in trade rumors as the trade deadline approaches.
