A Lee County man is in custody after he was accused of pointing a rifle both at a neighbor’s residence and at responding sheriff’s deputies.

Harold Wayne Ayers of 197 Ayers Lane in southern Lee County is accused of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, assault by pointing a gun and communicating threats.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded on Saturday to the Ayers Lane area after a neighbor reported that Ayers was standing in the woods pointing a rifle toward his home. Deputies apparently were able to see Ayers holding the gun and said he also apparently pointed it at them while they attempted to talk him out of the woods.

Deputies were able secure warrants without any gunfire and Ayers was taken into custody at his nearby home later in the day. He was placed the Lee County Jail under an $11,500 secured bond.
