Sanford area children are invited to participate in the Sanford Elks Lodge #1679 Hoop Shoot on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Southern Lee High School. Registration for the Hoop Shoot begins at 9 a.m. in the school’s gymnasium; the contest begins at 10 a.m.

The event, a competition to see who can make the most of 25 free throw attempts, is free to any child between the ages of 8 and 13. Age is determined as of April 1, 2020. Six winners – one boy and one girl each from three age brackets – will have the opportunity to advance to a district contest set for January in Roxboro. From there, children can advance to a state, a regional and in April, a national contest to be held in Chicago.

National winners have their names inscribed on a permanent “Hoop Shoot” plaque at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
