Japanese food will be back at the old Yamato location on South Horner Boulevard soon.

According to city planning documents, a restaurant called Teriyaki Express is set to occupy the building at 2610 S. Horner Blvd.

Plans show a fast casual Japanese hibachi style menu consisting of dishes like steak, chicken and fish. Owner Jeannette Lopez said she and her husband have remodeled the inside of the building, plan to offer drive thru service, and are shooting for an opening in mid-June, although that date isn’t yet firm.

“We’re also doing a promotion where the first 50 customers get a free meal,” she said, noting customers would be able to choose between teriyaki and hibachi chicken options.

Yamato closed in July 2019 after operating at the 2610 S. Horner Blvd. location for two decades.
