Charges of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle against a Spring Lake woman accused of causing an April wreck that left three people dead have been upgraded to second degree murder.
Ivory June Adajar, 38, of Spring Lake was served with the indictments on Tuesday at the Lee County Jail after the District Attorney’s Office decided to upgrade the charges against her. She faces three counts.
Additionally, she now faces a count of misdemeanor child abuse because her child was in a vehicle driven by her husband that she was allegedly chasing when the wreck occurred. According to police, Adajar attempted to take the Broadway Road exit off the U.S. 421 bypass and forced another vehicle off the road in the process. Lloyd Atkins, 60, Judy Atkins, 58, and Kimberly Atkins, 33, all died as a result. Two other people in the vehicle, including a young child, survived. The child in Adajar’s husband’s car was not injured.
Adajar had been jailed under $50,000 secured bond; after the charges were upgraded to murder she now has no bond.
